Growing up in Diamond Bar, California, a suburb of Los Angeles, the four rambunctious members of Seriously grew up in the epicenter of an international cross-section of cultures.

Chris Pham

Joshua Baek

Nathan Park

Philip Park

Growing up in Diamond Bar, California, a suburb of Los Angeles, the four rambunctious members of Seriously grew up in the epicenter of an international cross-section of cultures. They grew up around pan-Asian strip malls juxtaposed against mainstream suburban malls, listening to Asian pop songs and American rock and r&b, and britpop-influenced bands like Radiohead and Coldplay. And their songs are all about relationships. In fact, hanging out with these guys for just a few hours easily reveals the level of importance that relationships have on the four members’ lives. Seriously sings about their struggles in all kinds of relationships. Seriously’s music is melancholy-hued but is in the end, clearly optimistic. “Our songs are about the desire to belong, to be accepted,” says guitarist / songwriter, Joshua Baek. The moments of wisdom and raw honesty peppered throughout their songs is revealing of their youthful sense of idealism and hope.

Having met at a local Asian church, the four guys came to form the band Seriously only to compete in the most celebrated Asian American talent show in Los Angeles, Kollaboration. Clearly the crowd favorite and judged as the Best Musical Act by the panel of Asian American celebrity judges, Seriously won the grand prize winning an offer to record with producer / composer Woody Pak and his Artist Development company, Chaos Theory Music.

The four members of Seriously range in ages 21 to 25 years old. The members of Seriously have experienced a whirlwind of changes in having a musical career alongside their already packed lives as college students.

Vocals/Keyboard/Guitar
Age: 21

Where were you born and how long have you been playing music for?
I was born in Hollywood and I have been singing and playing guitar for about 7 years.

When did you discover you had a passion for music?
I discovered this passion for music at an early age actually. I used to sit in front of my stereo player singing along to Mariah Carey or Celine Dion. I also enjoyed a lot of video game music from a lot of Squaresoft composers.

In what ways did you develop this passion; who are your major influences?
I first developed this passion in middle school. Singing to a lot of Usher songs made me first an R&B singer. The first person I had ever sung to was “I Need a Girl” by P. Diddy featuring Usher. Good times. Right now, my major influences are John Mayer, U2, Mariah Carey, Mute Math, Coldplay. I can put them all on repeat easily.

Outside of music, what do you do? What do you like to do in your free time?
Right now I am attending Santa Monica college and it is my 4th year (yeah I’m going to be a super super senior!) in college. I’m studying computer information systems and perhaps minoring in chemistry to create some cool explosive devices that could be used on stage. In my free time, I enjoy talking to the ladies and playing video games like Super Smash Brothers.

What are your plans, goals, and dreams in the music business?
This is something that always feels like it’s constantly changing, but constantly improving. Just one of those things that comes with time. The plan right now is to just get our names, faces, and music out there for the world to know that there are four Asian fellows about to conquer the world!

What is your all-time favorite song?
This is a tough question. “In My Life” by the Beatles.

What is one song that you absolutely hate?
Currently any song by Jason Derulo. I don’t like that guy.

Favorite food and number.
STEAK. and it’s a tie between 4 and 7. 4 is a little more laid back for me, but 7 just sounds so complete.

I was born in Austin, Texas and have been playing music for about 7 years.

In junior high school I saw a cute girl sign up for band. She chose clarinet. So did I.

In what ways did you develop this passion; who are your major influences?
Music is just another form of expression and art. Art is everywhere around us if we would only notice. I develop this passion by keeping an open ear and staying around passionate and musical people. My major influences include anyone from Jeff Buckley to Jon Foreman, Imogen Heap to Devics, Derek Webb to John Mayer.

Bass guitar
Age: 22

Where were you born and how long have you been playing music for?
I was born in Berkeley, California and have been playing music since I was six years old.

When did you discover you had a passion for music?
I fell in love the first time my fingers met ivory.

In what ways did you develop this passion; who are your major influences?
Since first grade, I continually searched for new ways tickle my fancy, eventually playing pieces from the likes of Chopin to Ginastera. In fourth grade, I picked up the alto saxophone and discovered a different medium in which I could express my life in tone. However, something about rhythm always struck a chord within me, and I began playing snare drum for my school’s band in sixth grade. I continued my musical exploration by learning guitar and baritone saxophone in middle school. The low soothing sound of the baritone sax spoke to me, and once I joined drumline in eighth grade, I knew from the second I touched the bass guitar that it would be my go-to mode of expression and communication. The ability to play the rhythm of a drum with the low, foundational melodies of a baritone sax seemed to me the perfect combination. I played bass guitar in jazz band and church for four years thereafter; all of this has led me to where I am today–the bassist for Seriously. I am everyday still learning to develop this passion and take it to the next level. My major influences include, but are not limited to: Marcus Miller, Pino Palladino, Jaco Pastorius, ?uestlove, John Mayer, MuteMath, Ratatat, Daft Punk, Miles Davis, Bill Evans Trio, Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, and Stevie Wonder.

Outside of music, what do you do? What do you like to do in your free time?
I am currently a pre-med physiological science major at UCLA–I hope to one day become a cardiologist and mend broken hearts (provided we don’t win a Grammy). In my free time, I enjoy spending quality time with the family and kickin’ it with friends, basketball, snowboarding, international cuisine, coffee, naruto, watching Scrubs, movies, and a good read.

What are your plans, goals, and dreams in the music business?
Get rich or die trying (kidding!). Leave a legacy.

What is your all-time favorite song?
“Let it Be” by the Beatles.

What is one song that you absolutely hate?
“Hot N Cold” by Katy Perry.

Favorite food and number.
Anything momma cooks. 1.

Favorite quote.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” – John 16:33

Drums/Viola
Age: 22

Where were you born and how long have you been playing music for?
I was born in Los Angeles, California. I’ve been playing music ever since I was six years old.

When did you discover you had a passion for music?
When I woke up next to Stella…my viola.

In what ways did you develop this passion; who are your major influences?
At the wee age of 6, I remember intently watching my older brother practice violin on a daily basis. I was simply mesmerized and decided to pick up the viola. Playing and performing as the principle chair for 7 different orchestras, I started to appreciate the notion of harmony. The idea of harmoniously playing with individuals from different counties and even countries always sparked my interest for music. In the 6th grade, I picked up the alto saxophone to be in a class with particular someone and, luckily, experienced the orchestration of wind instruments in my middle school band and honor band. Around the same time, I started to play the drums for the praise team at my church and immediately fell in love…it was love at first sight or, in this case, love at first beat. To play and perform in respect for the Big Man Upstairs genuinely became my main passion and driving force for music. My major musical influences are: Darren King, Dominic Howard, Aaron Spears, Carter Beauford, John Blackwell, Chad Butler, ?uestlove, Jars of Clay, Hillsong United, Switchfoot, Leeland, Phil Wickham, Thrice, Coldplay, MuteMath, and Muse.

Outside of music, what do you do? What do you like to do on your free time?
I am currently an Economic Major/ Music Minor at UC San Diego. I would enjoy to simply go into business and work with them numbers. During my leisure, I love to just chill with my family, eat with the friends, watch movies, wrestle, a liberating run in San Diego, BCC, online sermons, Starbucks, a solid read, and a drive on the 5…wait what???

What are your plans, goals, and dreams in the music business?
To be an example of G.O.D. through my relationships and actions.

What is your all-time favorite song?
Leeland – Tears of the Saints

What is the one song that you absolutely hate?
None that I could think of.

Favorite food and number.
Bi-Bim Bop Mama’s style. 3, 7, 12…I get greedy with my numbers.
